A quick check on where your smoking habit stands. 6 questions, about 2 minutes.

When cigarettes control you

Nicotine dependence isn't just about willpower. It's a complex addiction involving physical, psychological, and behavioral components. The Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) measures how physically dependent you are on nicotine.

What the scores mean

  • 0-2: Very low dependence
  • 3-4: Low dependence
  • 5: Moderate dependence
  • 6-7: High dependence
  • 8-10: Very high dependence
Higher scores indicate stronger physical dependence and may suggest that nicotine replacement therapy or other cessation aids could be helpful.

About this scale

Karl Fagerstrom developed the original Fagerstrom Tolerance Questionnaire in 1978, with the revised FTND published in 1991. It's still widely used to assess nicotine dependence.

  • Internal consistency: alpha = 0.60-0.70
  • Test-retest reliability: r = 0.80+
  • Completion time: 2-3 minutes
The FTND focuses on two key indicators: how soon after waking you smoke your first cigarette (a strong dependence indicator) and how many cigarettes you smoke per day.
