Have you been made to question your own reality? This test screens for experiences of gaslighting in close relationships. 12 items, about 3 minutes.

Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation where someone makes you question your own reality.

The term comes from the 1938 play *Gas Light*, in which a husband manipulates his wife into thinking she is losing her mind by dimming the gas lights and denying it is happening.

Gaslighting behaviors include:

  • Countering: repeatedly questioning your memory or perception ("That never happened")
  • Withholding: pretending not to understand what you are saying
  • Trivializing: dismissing your feelings as overreactions ("You are too sensitive")
  • Denial: denying promises or agreements were made
  • Diverting: changing the subject when you raise concerns
  • Stereotyping: using stereotypes to dismiss your perspective
This screening is based on common gaslighting patterns identified in clinical and research literature. It is a self-assessment tool, not a clinical diagnostic instrument.
