What Is Internalized Sexual Stigma?
Internalized sexual stigma (also known as internalized homophobia) refers to the acceptance and incorporation of negative societal attitudes about one's own sexual orientation. The Revised Internalized Homophobia Scale (IHP-R), based on Herek, Gillis & Cogan (2009), is a 5-item unidimensional measure designed to assess this construct among sexual minority adults.
Scoring
All 5 items are scored on a 5-point Likert scale (1=Strongly Disagree → 5=Strongly Agree). Total scores range from 5 to 25, with higher scores indicating greater internalized sexual stigma.
Interpretation
- 5–7: Minimal internalized stigma
- 8–13: Low internalized stigma
- 14–19: Moderate internalized stigma
