What Is Internalized Sexual Stigma?
Internalized sexual stigma (also known as internalized homophobia) refers to the acceptance and incorporation of negative societal attitudes about one's own sexual orientation. Herek, Gillis & Cogan (2009) developed the 5-item IHP-R to measure this among sexual minority adults.
Scoring
Higher scores indicate greater internalized sexual stigma.
Interpretation
- 5-7: Minimal internalized stigma
- 8-13: Low internalized stigma
- 14-19: Moderate internalized stigma
- 20-25: High internalized stigma
