Sexual orientation is not just straight or gay. The Klein Grid captures its complexity across 7 dimensions and 3 time frames. 21 items, about 8 minutes.

What Is the Klein Sexual Orientation Grid (KSOG)?

The KSOG is a multi-dimensional assessment of sexual orientation. Klein, Sepekoff & Wolf developed it in 1985. Expanding on the Kinsey Scale's single-dimension approach, the KSOG recognizes that sexual orientation is composed of multiple independent variables that may change over time.

Seven Dimensions × Three Time Frames

The grid covers 7 variables, each rated across 3 time periods:

VariablePastPresentIdeal
----------:----::-------::-----:
Sexual Attraction
Sexual Behavior
Sexual Fantasies
Emotional Preference
Social Preference
Self-Identification
Lifestyle
Each is rated on a 7-point scale (1=Other Sex Only → 7=Same Sex Only).

Scoring

Each of the 7 dimensions produces three scores (past, present, ideal). A total score can be calculated as the average of all 21 items. The grid can also produce a categorized sexual orientation label.
