Relationship Assessment Scale (RAS)
Hendrick Relationship Satisfaction
Happy in your relationship? 7 quick questions based on Hendrick's Relationship Assessment Scale (RAS). Works for dating, cohabiting, or married relationships. About 3 minutes.
The Relationship Assessment Scale (RAS) asks seven questions about how satisfied you are with your relationship. It doesn't matter if you're dating, living together, or married — the scale was designed to work across different kinds of relationships.
Susan Hendrick developed it in 1988 partly because existing tools like the Dyadic Adjustment Scale were long and focused on married couples. She wanted something shorter and more flexible.
The seven items cover things like how well your partner meets your needs, how the relationship compares to others, and whether it's lived up to what you expected. Two of the seven are reverse-scored. Total scores range from 7 to 35, with higher scores meaning higher satisfaction.
It's been cited over 2,200 times and translated into many languages. The internal consistency is solid — Cronbach's alpha typically falls between .86 and .95 across studies. It correlates strongly with longer measures like the DAS (r = .80) and the Couples Satisfaction Index (r = .93).
There's no official clinical cutoff. Researchers usually interpret scores relative to sample norms or track changes over time. One large study found a mean of 26.0 (SD = 6.5) using a 0-35 version of the scale.
