What Is the Sell Assessment of Sexual Orientation (SASO)?

The Sell Assessment of Sexual Orientation (SASO), developed by Sell (1996), is a 12-item orthogonal dual-axis assessment of sexual orientation. It independently measures homosexual and heterosexual dimensions across multiple domains.

Three Domains

1. Sexual Attraction: Number, frequency, and intensity of attractions to men and women 2. Sexual Contact: Number of sexual contacts with men and women 3. Sexual Identity: Self-identification as homosexual, heterosexual, or bisexual

Scoring

The SASO uses a unique four-summary-score system:

  • Homosexual Summary Score
  • Heterosexual Summary Score
  • Bisexual Summary Score
  • Asexual Summary Score
This allows multi-dimensional classification beyond traditional binary categories.
