Psychological Well-Being Scale (SPWB-42)
Ryff’s Scales of Psychological Well-Being — 42-item version

What does it mean to flourish?
The Scales of Psychological Well-Being (SPWB) measure six dimensions of positive psychological functioning. Unlike measures of happiness or life satisfaction, the SPWB captures what it means to thrive as a human being.
The six dimensions
1. Autonomy — self-determining, independent, self-regulated 2. Environmental mastery — ability to manage life's demands 3. Personal growth — sense of continued development 4. Positive relations — warm, satisfying relationships 5. Purpose in life — sense of meaning and direction 6. Self-acceptance — positive attitude toward self
About this scale
Carol Ryff developed the SPWB in 1989 based on a theoretical model of psychological well-being. It's widely used in positive psychology research.
Research shows that psychological well-being is associated with:
- Better physical health
- Lower risk of chronic disease
- Greater resilience
- Longer life
