What Is Curiosity?
Curiosity is the urge to explore the unfamiliar and lean into uncertainty. The Curiosity and Exploration Inventory-II (CEI-II) measures two sides of it.
Kashdan et al. (2009) revised the original CEI to better capture how people seek out novelty and how they handle the uncertainty that comes with it.
Two Dimensions, 10 Items
- Stretching (5 items): actively looking for new experiences and knowledge
- Embracing (5 items): willingness to accept the unpredictable and ambiguous
Psychometrics
- alpha = .83--.87 (stretching), .76--.85 (embracing)
- Related to but distinct from the Big Five openness dimension
- Positive correlations with well-being, creativity, and life satisfaction
