When life throws you a curveball, do you bend or break? The Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (CFI) measures how flexibly you think when things get difficult — whether you can see a situation from other angles, come up with more than one way through it, and feel able to handle it. About 5 minutes. A research instrument, not a diagnostic tool.

What Is Cognitive Flexibility?

Cognitive flexibility is how readily you adjust your thinking when a situation gets difficult — whether you can see alternative explanations, generate multiple solutions, and believe you can handle what comes. Cognitive-behavioral therapy rests on the idea that emotional problems are often fed by rigid thinking: all-or-nothing judgments, single explanations, worries that loop and never resolve. Increasing flexibility is part of loosening that up.

The Two Dimensions

Alternatives: how easily you find alternative explanations for events and multiple solutions to problems.

Control (7 items): how much you perceive difficult situations as controllable and feel able to cope with them.

The two subscales correlate moderately but stay distinct — someone can generate plenty of options and still feel hopeless, while another person has few options but is sure they will cope. Reading them separately tells you more than the total.

Scoring & Interpretation

Higher scores mean greater cognitive flexibility. Use the results for self-understanding, not diagnosis.

Reliability & Validity

In the development sample, internal consistency was α = 0.90 for the total, 0.91 for Alternatives and 0.86 for Control; 7-week test-retest reliability was r = 0.81 for the total (Dennis & Vander Wal, 2010). CFI scores correlate with more adaptive coping and lower depressive symptoms. The Chinese version has been validated in college samples (Wang et al., 2016).

This test is for education and self-exploration only. It is not a clinical diagnostic instrument.

Result Interpretation

After completing the 20 questions, you'll receive an immediate, detailed report with:

  • Your score — calculated automatically based on your responses
  • Score interpretation — what your score means in practical terms
  • Context — how your results compare to general population norms where available
