Ruminative Response Scale
Rumination patterns: how much you dwell on distress and its causes
When you are down, do you find yourself ruminating on things? The RRS measures ruminative thinking across three dimensions. 22 items, about 8 minutes.
Do you get stuck in thought loops?
The Ruminative Responses Scale (RRS) measures how often you find yourself repeatedly focusing on distress and its causes. Based on Susan Nolen-Hoeksema's Response Styles Theory (1991), it separates brooding (passively dwelling) from reflection (actively thinking things through). Items use a 4-point frequency scale.
Higher scores are consistently linked to higher risk for depression onset and longer episodes. The RRS is a common tool in clinical research for identifying maladaptive thinking patterns.
