How confident are you in your ability to handle life's challenges? The General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) measures optimistic self-beliefs about coping with difficult demands. 10 questions, takes 3 minutes. Validated in 30+ countries with high reliability (α = 0.86–0.94).

How confident are you that you can handle something you've never done before? That's what the GSES measures -- your general sense of self-efficacy, not your actual skill set.

There are 10 items, each rated on a 4-point scale (1=Not at all true, 4=Exactly true). It takes about 3 minutes to complete and gives you a score between 10 and 40.

About the GSES

    • Reliability: Internal consistency alpha = 0.86-0.94 across 30+ countries; test-retest r = 0.63-0.76 over 1-year period
    • Cross-cultural data: Validated in 33 countries by Scholz et al. (2002) -- psychometric properties hold up well across cultures

Important: This scale is a screening tool for self-efficacy assessment only and does not constitute a clinical diagnosis. If you are experiencing significant psychological distress, please seek professional help.

Scoring Guide

Total score ranges from 10 to 40. 10-20=Low self-efficacy, 21-29=Moderate self-efficacy, 30-34=High self-efficacy, 35-40=Very high self-efficacy. Mean in general populations is approx 29 (SD approx 5). Note: This is a screening measure, not a clinical diagnosis.
