The General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) was developed by Schwarzer & Jerusalem in 1995. It measures a person's belief in their own ability to cope with difficult demands and novel situations — a core component of psychological resilience and proactive behavior.

Self-efficacy is one of the most researched constructs in psychology. According to Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory, self-efficacy beliefs influence how people think, feel, motivate themselves, and act. Higher self-efficacy is linked to better performance, greater persistence, lower stress, and improved mental health outcomes.

About the GSES

Questions: 10 items, each rated on a 4-point scale (1=Not at all true → 4=Exactly true)

Range: Total score 10–40 (all items forward-scored)

Reliability: Internal consistency α = 0.86–0.94 across 30+ countries; test-retest r = 0.63–0.76 over 1-year period

Cross-cultural validity: Validated in 33 countries by Scholz et al.
