What Is Compulsive Hoarding?
Compulsive hoarding involves three core symptoms: difficulty discarding possessions, excessive clutter that impairs living spaces, and excessive acquisition of unneeded items. The Saving Inventory-Revised (SI-R) was developed by Frost, Steketee & Grisham (2004) to measure these dimensions.
Scoring
All 23 items use a 0-4 Likert scale (0=Not at all → 4=Extreme/Very much so). Scores are calculated for three subscales and a total score:
- Difficulty Discarding (items 1-7): range 0-28
- Clutter (items 8-16): range 0-36
- Acquisition (items 17-23): range 0-28
- Total: range 0-92
Interpretation
- 0-23: Mild — occasional difficulties, minimal life disruption
- 24-46: Moderate — noticeable impact on living space or well-being
- 47-69: Significant — clinically relevant distress or impairment
- 70-92: Extreme — serious consequences for health, safety, quality of life
