How have you been doing lately — not just whether things are bad, but whether the good stuff is working? The MHC-SF measures positive mental health across emotional, social, and psychological dimensions. 14 items, about 3-5 minutes.

Are You Just Not Sick, or Actually Well?

For decades, mental health was defined as the absence of mental illness. Corey Keyes argued that's wrong — not having depression doesn't mean you're flourishing, the same way not having a cold doesn't mean you're physically fit.

The Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (MHC-SF) is built on that idea. It doesn't ask about symptoms. It asks how often you've experienced signs of positive mental health: happiness, belonging, meaning, self-acceptance.

What Does the MHC-SF Measure?

14 items across three dimensions:

  • Emotional well-being: How often do you feel happy, interested in life, and satisfied?
  • Social well-being: Do you feel you contribute to society? That you belong to a community? That the world is becoming a better place?
  • Psychological well-being: Do you accept yourself? Can you manage your daily responsibilities? Do you have warm relationships?
Rate each item on how often you've felt this way in the past month (0 = never to 5 = every day).

Reading Your Results

MHC-SF doesn't just report one score — it classifies you into one of three categories:

  • Flourishing: At least one emotional well-being item rated "almost every day" or "every day," plus at least 6 of 11 social and psychological well-being items rated "almost every day" or "every day."
  • Languishing: No emotional well-being items rated at high frequency, and at least 6 of 11 social and psychological items rated "never" or "once or twice."
  • Moderate: Neither flourishing nor languishing — the middle ground.
Keyes' original study found about 18% of American adults were flourishing and about 12% were languishing. Most people fall somewhere in the middle.

MHC-SF is a positive mental health measure, not a diagnostic tool. If you're concerned about your mental health, please talk to a professional.
