Social Support Scale (MSPSS)
12-item measure of perceived social support from family and friends
Do you have people you can turn to? The MSPSS measures perceived social support from family, friends, and significant others. 12 items, about 3-5 minutes.
Who's Got Your Back?
The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) measures how supported you feel by family, friends, and significant others across 12 items. Zimet, Dahlem, Zimet & Farley published it in 1988. Three subscales - family, friends, significant other - each scored separately. Quick to fill out, it's a staple in both clinical and research settings.
Scoring Guide
12 items scored on three dimensions: Significant Other Support (SOS, items 1,2,5,10), Family Support (FS, items 3,4,8,11), Friends Support (FrS, items 6,7,9,12). Each item 1-7. Dimension score = sum of its items (range 4-28). Total score = sum of all items (range 12-84). Higher scores indicate more perceived social support.Result Interpretation
