Sexual satisfaction is more than just orgasms. It is about arousal, emotional presence, and how you and your partner work together. This 20-item scale breaks it down into two dimensions: how you experience sex yourself, and how the partner/activity side feels to you. About 5 minutes. Not a diagnostic tool.
The New Sexual Satisfaction Scale (NSSS) measures sexual satisfaction — not your partner’s performance or your sexual functioning per se, but how satisfied you are with your own sexual experience. A Croatian team developed it in 2010, validated across Croatian and U.S. samples.
Two Dimensions
Ego-Centered — Items 1–10
Your arousal, orgasm quality, focus, emotional openness. This is entirely about you — it doesn’t depend on your partner’s behavior.
Partner-Centered — Items 10–20
Sexual acts, partner’s openness, variety, frequency. This captures the interpersonal side of satisfaction.
Each item rated 1 (not at all satisfied) to 5 (extremely satisfied), total 0–80 (with 0 indicating no sexual activity in the measured period). The two subscales can be reported separately.
The internal consistency is excellent: alpha > .94 for both subscales. Convergent validity with the IIGSS (Index of Sexual Satisfaction) is strong. Construct validity has been confirmed in 13 countries with CFA models.
One note: the NSSS asks about the past six months, so it captures a broader picture than scales that ask about the last two weeks.
