Measures well-being across 6 dimensions: Autonomy, Environmental Mastery, Personal Growth, Positive Relations, Purpose in Life, Self-Acceptance.

What does it mean to flourish?

The Psychological Well-Being Scale (PWBS-18) measures six dimensions of positive psychological functioning. Based on Carol Ryff's model, it captures what it means to thrive as a human being.

The six dimensions

1. Autonomy — self-determining, independent 2. Environmental mastery — ability to manage life's demands 3. Personal growth — sense of continued development 4. Positive relations — warm, satisfying relationships 5. Purpose in life — sense of meaning and direction 6. Self-acceptance — positive attitude toward self

About this scale

Carol Ryff developed the Psychological Well-Being Scales in 1989. The 18-item version used here is a short form of the original 84-item scale.

Research shows that psychological well-being is associated with:

  • Better physical health
  • Lower risk of chronic disease
  • Greater resilience
  • Longer life
This assessment helps you understand your psychological well-being across multiple dimensions. It can show you where you're doing well and where you might grow.
