Emotional complexity has two parts: how many different emotions you actually experience (range), and how finely you can tell similar feelings apart (differentiation). This 14-item scale by Kang and Shaver (2004) measures both. Not a diagnostic tool — a map of your emotional palette. About 3 minutes.

How wide and how fine are your emotions?

Emotional complexity is not the same thing as EQ. It describes the structure of your emotional experience itself:

  • Range — how many different emotions you actually experience. Some people move from curiosity to irritation to being moved within a single day; others mostly feel "okay."
  • Differentiation — whether you can make fine distinctions between similar feelings. Is annoyed the same as irritated? Disappointed the same as sad? The finer you split, the clearer you know what is happening in you.
Kang and Shaver (2004) built this 14-item scale at UC Davis and validated the two-dimension structure across two studies (1,129 participants total). Their metaphor: emotional complexity is a tree. Range is the big branches — how many different kinds of emotion you can reach. Differentiation is the small branches — how many fine variations you can tell apart on each branch.

Reading your results

  • High range: a wide emotional palette, a life with plot, feelings that run deep.
  • High differentiation: you can name what you feel with precision, and feelings are generally easier to handle.
  • High on both: rich and fine-grained emotional experience — the profile research links to better regulation and more empathy.
  • Low on both: a simple, steady emotional life — not a flaw, just a different way of organizing it.
In the original studies, range correlated with openness and private self-consciousness, differentiation with empathy and interpersonal adjustment — and neither was related to pure cognitive ability. The Chinese validation (Cao et al., 2024) replicated the two-factor structure.

This is a research scale, not a diagnostic instrument.
