How much does social anxiety get in your way? The SPIN looks at three things: what you're afraid of, what you avoid, and what your body does. 17 items, about 5 minutes. It won't diagnose you, but it'll give you a sense of where you stand.

What Is the Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN)?

The SPIN is a 17-item self-report scale that measures social anxiety over the past week. Connor and colleagues published it in 2000 as a shorter alternative to longer social anxiety measures, something quick enough for screening but still thorough enough to cover the main symptom areas.

It covers three dimensions:

  • Fear -- how much social situations scare you
  • Avoidance -- what you steer clear of
  • Physical symptoms -- blushing, sweating, racing heart, trembling
The SPIN isn't a diagnostic tool on its own, but it's widely used in clinical settings for screening and tracking treatment progress.
