Introduction

The PCL-5 is a 20-item self-report measure developed by the National Center for PTSD in 2013. It assesses the 20 DSM-5 symptoms of PTSD across four symptom clusters.

Theoretical Basis

DSM-5 reclassified PTSD. The PCL-5 is grounded in the cognitive model (Ehlers & Clark, 2000) and supported by neurobiological research on amygdala hyperreactivity.

Dimensional Interpretation

The PCL-5 uses a 5-point Likert scale (0-4), total score range 0-80. Four symptom clusters: intrusion, avoidance, negative alterations, and arousal/reactivity alterations.

Applications

Clinical screening, treatment monitoring, post-disaster community screening, military mental health, and research.
