CAGE-AID Substance Abuse Screening
Quick screening for alcohol and drug use
A 4-question screening tool for alcohol and drug use problems. Quick, non-judgmental, widely used in primary care.
What is CAGE-AID?
CAGE-AID is the original CAGE questionnaire expanded to cover drugs alongside alcohol. Four questions, one each about cutting down, being criticized, feeling guilty, and needing a morning drink or dose.
Scoring
Each yes = 1 point. Total 0-4. A score of 2+ is a positive screen. Some clinicians use 1 as the cutoff to catch more people.
Disclaimer
CAGE-AID is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. A positive result means further evaluation makes sense, not that you have a disorder.
