Hikikomori Questionnaire (HQ-25)
25-item measure of pathological social withdrawal
The HQ-25, developed by Teo et al. (2018), measures pathological social withdrawal (hikikomori) across three core dimensions: socialization, isolation, and emotional support.
Are you withdrawing from the world?
Most people enjoy solitude sometimes. But when social withdrawal becomes extreme — you rarely leave the house, avoid contact with others, and feel cut off from daily life — it crosses into something different. The term hikikomori, from Japan, describes this kind of severe social isolation.
The Hikikomori Questionnaire (HQ-25) measures this pattern. Teo et al. (2018) developed it as a 25-item self-report scale covering three core dimensions: socialization, isolation, and emotional support. Scores range from 25 to 125.
Scoring Guide
Each item 1-5 (1=Strongly disagree, 5=Strongly agree), no reverse scoring. Total 25-125. Three subscales: Socialization: 1,4,6,9,12,15,18,21,23,25 (10 items); Isolation: 2,5,7,10,13,16,19,22,24 (9 items); Emotional Support: 3,8,11,14,17,20 (6 items). Higher scores indicate greater social withdrawal.Result Interpretation
