Couples Satisfaction Index (CSI-4)
IRT-Optimized Ultra-Short Form
Happy in your relationship? 4 quick questions that capture the most telling signs of relationship satisfaction. IRT-optimized ultra-short form based on Funk & Rogge (2007), selecting the 4 most informative items from the original 32. Scores below 13.5 suggest relationship distress.
The Four-Question Version
The CSI-4 is the four items from the CSI-32 that carry the most information. Funk and Rogge picked them using item response theory from the same 180-item pool that produced the longer versions.
The four questions cover global happiness with the relationship, how well you and your partner get along, the overall warmth, and a general satisfaction rating. It takes about a minute. Scores run 0-21. Alpha is still 0.94 — not much drop from the 32-item version 0.98.
A score below 13.5 is the rough cutoff for significant dissatisfaction. Four questions can only tell you so much — it is a screener, not a deep dive. If your score is low, the full CSI-16 or CSI-32 will give you a clearer picture.
