Generalized Anxiety Disorder Test (GAD-7)
7-question anxiety check-in, about 3 minutes
Been feeling anxious or worried and can't seem to stop? The GAD-7 is a 7-item screening tool for generalized anxiety disorder. Each item asks how often you've been bothered by common anxiety symptoms over the last 2 weeks. Takes 2-3 minutes.
When worry won't stop
Everyone worries sometimes. But when worry becomes constant, uncontrollable, and starts interfering with daily life, it might be more than just stress.
The GAD-7 asks one simple question: how often have you been bothered by common anxiety symptoms over the past two weeks? Each item covers a core feature of generalized anxiety disorder — from feeling nervous and on edge to being unable to stop worrying or relaxing.
What the scores mean
- 0–4: Minimal anxiety
- 5–9: Mild anxiety (monitoring recommended)
- 10–14: Moderate anxiety (consider professional consultation)
- 15–21: Severe anxiety (professional evaluation recommended)
About this scale
Spitzer, Kroenke, Williams, and Löwe developed the GAD-7 in 2006 as a brief screening tool that maps directly onto DSM criteria. It's since been validated across hundreds of studies and multiple languages.
- Internal consistency: α = 0.92
- Test-retest reliability: r = 0.83
- Completion time: 2–3 minutes
This is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. If your score concerns you, talking to a healthcare professional is the best next step.
