Hypersexual Behavior Inventory (HBI)
19-item multidimensional self-report — Coping, Control & Consequences
Based on Reid, Garos & Carpenter (2011). A 19-item multidimensional self-report inventory measuring coping (using sex to manage negative emotions), control (difficulty regulating sexual urges), and consequences (negative life impact). 5-point Likert (1=Strongly Disagree → 5=Strongly Agree).
The Hypersexual Behavior Inventory (HBI) was developed by Reid, Garos & Carpenter (2011) based on DSM-5 Hypersexual Disorder field trial criteria. It measures three core dimensions: (1) Coping — using sexual behavior to manage negative emotions; (2) Control — difficulty regulating sexual urges and behaviors; (3) Consequences — negative life impact of sexual behavior. Response scale is 5-point Likert (1=Strongly Disagree → 5=Strongly Agree), all items forward-scored. Strong psychometric properties: total score α = .96, subscale αs .91–.94.
Scoring Guide
All items forward-scored. Total range 19-95. Dimensions: Coping (items 1-7, range 7-35), Control (items 8-15, range 8-40), Consequences (items 16-19, range 4-20). Bőthe et al. (2019) large sample mean=28.5 (SD=11.4).
