Music Performance Anxiety Test (K-MPAI-R)
Kenny Music Performance Anxiety Inventory-Revised
The K-MPAI-R measures music performance anxiety in musicians. Based on Barlow's triple vulnerability model, it covers somatic anxiety, self/other scrutiny, depression/hopelessness, parental empathy, memory confidence, trait anxiety, anxious apprehension, and biological vulnerability. 40 items, ~8 minutes. Validated across 22 languages (full-scale α=0.94).
Does Performance Anxiety Hold You Back?
That racing heart before you step on stage. The sweaty palms, the shaking hands, the feeling that your mind is about to go blank. Every musician knows this feeling — but for some, it's more than just nerves. It's a pattern that interferes with their ability to perform, to enjoy music, to do what they love.
The Kenny Music Performance Anxiety Inventory-Revised (K-MPAI-R) is a 40-item questionnaire designed to measure the specific ways performance anxiety shows up for musicians. It's based on Barlow's triple vulnerability model, which looks at three layers: general biological sensitivity, psychological predisposition, and anxiety specifically tied to performance situations.
The scale covers multiple dimensions: somatic anxiety (the physical symptoms), self and other scrutiny (feeling judged), depression/hopelessness, memory confidence, parental empathy, trait anxiety, anxious apprehension, and biological vulnerability. It takes about 8 minutes to complete.
The scale has been validated across 22 languages (full-scale α=0.94) and used in 400+ studies. Clinical reference cutoffs for professional orchestral musicians range 104.5–118.5 (Kenny, 2009, ROC analysis); scores above 105 warrant attention.
Note: This is a screening tool, not a clinical diagnosis. If performance anxiety is significantly affecting your life, consider speaking with a mental health professional.
Scoring Guide
40 items, 0-6 Likert (0=Strongly Disagree, 6=Strongly Agree). Reverse-scored items: 1,2,9,17,23,33,35,37 (inverted before scoring). Total = sum of all 40 items, max 240. Higher scores = greater performance anxiety. Clinical reference cutoffs (Kenny, 2009, professional orchestral musicians, ROC): 104.5 (STAI-T ≥ 60), 105.3 (STAI-T ≥ 65), 110 (PRIME-MD one depression item), 118.5 (PRIME-MD two depression items). Subscales are reference dimensions only (factor structure varies across validations, 2-7 factors); total score is the primary metric.Result Interpretation
After completing the 40 questions, you'll receive an immediate, detailed report with:
- Your score — calculated automatically based on your responses
- Score interpretation — what your score means in practical terms
- Dimension breakdown — separate scores for each sub-scale
- Context — how your results compare to general population norms where available
