Trust is one of those things you do not think about until it cracks. The Relationship Trust Scale looks at three layers of trust in close relationships: whether you can predict your partner behavior, whether you can depend on them to follow through, and whether you feel secure about where the relationship is heading.

The original framework comes from Rempel and Holmes (1986), who found that trust is not one single thing. Early in a relationship, trust is mostly about predictability. Over time, it shifts toward dependability and eventually faith a belief that your partner will be there for you even when you cannot predict or control what happens.

This version is adapted as a 12-item self-reflection tool. It is not a diagnostic instrument trust is too complex for a score to tell the whole story.

What It Measures

    • Predictability Can you anticipate how your partner will act? Consistent behavior builds a foundation.
    • Dependability Does your partner follow through on commitments? Reliability matters when things get real.
    • Faith Do you feel secure about the relationship future? Faith is the deepest layer of trust.

Scoring Guide

Scoring: Each item rated 1-7 (1=Strongly Disagree to 7=Strongly Agree). Items 4, 8, 11 are reverse-scored. Total score = sum of all 12 items, range 12-84. Higher scores = higher trust.
