Do sexual thoughts and behaviors keep getting in the way of your life? The SCS is a 10-item screening tool that measures compulsive sexual thoughts and behaviors. About 3 minutes.

What Is the Sexual Compulsivity Scale (SCS)?

Sexual thoughts and behaviors that keep interfering with daily life -- but you are not sure whether it counts as a problem. SCS is a quick way to get a sense of where you stand.

Developed by Kalichman & Rompa in 1995 for HIV prevention research, the SCS has since been used across clinical and non-clinical populations. It is 10 items covering the core features of sexual compulsivity: intrusive thoughts, loss of control, and interference with daily life.

Scoring

Total score ranges from 10-40. Higher scores indicate more compulsive sexual tendencies.

  • 10-16: Low range -- few compulsive sexual thoughts or behaviors
  • 17-23: Moderate -- some areas may need attention
  • 24-40: Elevated -- above clinical cutoff; further evaluation recommended
> This scale is a screening tool, not a diagnostic instrument. If these thoughts or behaviors distress you, consider speaking with a professional.

Reliability & Validity

  • Internal consistency: Cronbach's alpha = .85-.93 (across studies)
  • Test-retest reliability: stable
  • Convergent validity with Sexual Sensation Seeking Scale r approx .50-.60
  • Incremental validity in predicting sexual risk behavior
