Working Alliance Inventory-Short Revised (WAI-SR)
Therapeutic relationship quality — 12 items, 3 dimensions
How strong is your therapeutic alliance? The WAI-SR measures the quality of your relationship with your therapist across three areas: agreement on tasks, agreement on goals, and emotional bond.
How Strong Is Your Therapeutic Alliance?
The relationship between you and your therapist matters. Research shows that the quality of this relationship — called the "therapeutic alliance" — is a strong predictor of positive therapy outcomes, regardless of the specific approach used.
The Working Alliance Inventory-Short Revised (WAI-SR) is a 12-item questionnaire that measures three core components of the therapeutic bond: agreement on goals (are you working toward the same things?), agreement on tasks (do you both agree on how to get there?), and the quality of the bond itself (do you feel safe, understood, and respected?).
Developed as a shorter alternative to the original 36-item WAI, the WAI-SR takes about 5 minutes to complete. It's widely used in both clinical practice and research to track how the therapeutic relationship evolves over time.
Note: Use this tool for self-reflection. If you're in therapy and have concerns about the relationship, discussing them directly with your therapist can be valuable.
